1868년 무진년 5월 병인박해로 전국이 피비린내로 진동하던 때, 강릉시 성산면 위촌리 골아우 마을에서는 무슨 일이 일어났을까? 아무리 두메산골이라고 하지만 이곳 역시 병인박해의 굴레에서 벗어나지 못했다.
1868년 골아우의 봄은 유난히 따스했다. 동네 처녀와 아낙들은 삼사오오 모여 보리밭 김매기에 여념이 없었고, 골아우 총각들과 아재들은 모내기 준비로 한창 바빴다. 논에 물을대어 써레질을 하고 못자리 관리에 정성을 쏟았다.
